More and more families discover that Islay is also a magnificent destination for young children. There are several good playgrounds, many beaches, beautiful and interesting walking opportunities and lots of other activities. Unfortunately the weather can be somewhat unpredictable and there is always the chance of a rainy day during your stay on Islay. To prevent you from bringing a car load of toys to keep your child happy during that rainy day you might want to read on. Islay and Jura have an excellent facility called the "Islay and Jura Toy Library" where everyone, locals and visitors, can borrow a great selection of toys for the time you are on the island.
The Toy Library on Islay and Jura has been running since 2003 and their aim is to bring together young families to provide opportunities for developmental play. So how does it work? The library provides carefully selected toys to borrow, activity and play sessions and it's a friendly and informative meeting place for parents and carers. Their service is aimed at families with children from birth up to the age of eleven living on Islay and Jura and also to families visiting the island. There is an annual charge to become a member which enables you to drop in and choose a toy from our catalogues and borrow them for up to a month. They also have travel cots, high chairs, baby activity centers and much more.
Location, opening hours and costs
You'll find the Toy Library downstairs at Ionad Chaluim Chille Ile (Gaelic College) in Bowmore. The opening hours are Monday to Friday from 2pm to 4pm. They visit Jura on the last Friday of each month from 10-12pm. The Annual member fees are £10 per family starting on the 1st of September. If you join during the year you pay according to a sliding structure. Dec-Feb £7.50, Mar-May £5, Jun-Aug £2.50.
Update: The Toy Library has moved to Islay House Square in August 2016. More info here...
