The Singing Sands

Directions: From Port Ellen, drive up the Oa and go left after the graveyard at Kilnaughton. Find a parking place near the graveyard.

Walk: From the graveyard, follow the track along the shore of Kilnaughton Bay. Keep an eye out for wildlife. An occasional otter or seal can be seen in the bay as well as eider ducks and other birds. Keep following the track towards the lighthouse. Just before Carraig Fhada, go right on a wee track up the hill which is signposted as Singing Sands. Follow the track right behind the houses, and go right at the top to access the beach. You can also visit the beautiful lighthouse which was commissioned in 1832 by Walter Frederick Campbell in memory of Lady Ellenor Campbell. This is a beautiful secluded beach where the sands do seem to sing when you move over them! It’s also an ideal place to watch the ferries coming into Port Ellen Harbour.
